Symptoms of pleural effusions may include:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pian, especially on breathing in deeply (pleurisy, or pleuritic pain)
- Fever
- Cough

- Patient History
- Physical Examination
- Chest X - Ray
- CT Scan
- Ultarsound
- A pleural tap may be needed
