Platelete Apheresis (Mega Unit) is used for the collection of donor blood components (such aplatelets or plasma) as well as for the treatment for certain medical conditions in which a part of the blood that contains disease-provoking elements is removed. Aphaeresis, the blood of a donor or patient is passed through an apparatus that separates out one particular constituent and returned the reminder to the circulation.
A normal platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 350,000

The Blood Bank focuses on:
a) Documentation of blood donor informed consent.
b) Documentation of Blood Screening for infectious diseases.
c) Processing of Donated blood as per established Standard Operating Protocols.
d) Storage, Labeling, access control, temperature requirement, Cross matching, collection, administration of blood and blood products and other vital aspects of blood banking are monitored and assured as per MSDS protocols.
e) Patients disease history and medication chart is consulted before prescribing a blood product.
f) Professional team of doctors and paramedical staffs have an eye to identify real and suspected transfusion reactions.
g) Disposal of blood and related products is assured to comply with environmental standards.
Platelet Apheresis may be prescribed by treating consultant physician based on the presenting symptoms, medical history, laboratory blood reports and diagnostic tests.

Apheresis is usually prescribed in the treatment of following disease:
- Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
- Viral infections, including chickenpox, parvovirus, hepatitis C, Epstein-Barr, mononucleosis, or HIV
- Blood cancer such as leukemia or lymphoma
- A problem with your bone marrow
- Miliary tuberculosis (miliary TB)
- Vitamin B12 or folate (vitamin B9) deficiency
- Aplastic anemia
- Leukopenia
