Plateletpheresis is the process of collecting thrombocytes, more commonly called platelets, a component of blood involved in blood clotting. The term specifically refers to the method of collecting the platelets, which is performed by a device used in blood donation that separates the platelets and returns other portions of the blood to the donor.
A normal platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 350,000

The Blood Bank focuses on:
a) Documentation of blood donor informed consent.
b) Documentation of Blood Screening for infectious diseases.
c) Processing of Donated blood as per established Standard Operating Protocols.
d) Storage, Labeling, access control, temperature requirement, Cross matching, collection, administration of blood and blood products and other vital aspects of blood banking are monitored and assured as per MSDS protocols.
e) Patients disease history and medication chart is consulted before prescribing a blood product.
f) Professional team of doctors and paramedical staffs have an eye to identify real and suspected transfusion reactions.
g) Disposal of blood and related products is assured to comply with environmental standards.
Platelet transfusion may be prescribed by treating consultant physician based on the presenting symptoms, medical history, laboratory blood reports and diagnostic tests.

Platelet transfusion can be a life-saving procedure in preventing or treating serious complications from
- Bleeding and hemorrhage in patients who have disorders manifesting as thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) or platelet dysfunction.
This process may also be used therapeutically to treat disorders resulting in extraordinarily high platelet counts such as essential thrombocytosis.
