Swelling of the retina in diabetes mellitus due to leaking of fluid from blood vessels within the macula. Patients with DME typically experience blurred vision which can be severe.
Common symptoms of DME are
• Distortion of objects tested by Amsler’s Grid
• Floaters,
• Double vision and
• Eventually blindness if it goes untreated.
Macular edema occurs inside the layers of retina tissue, you may have a test called
• Fluorescein angiography, or
• Optical coherence tomography (OCT) to help make an accurate diagnosis.
The treatments for focal and diffuse DME differ, but they both involve laser procedures. Most doctors use focal laser treatment to treat focal DME and grid laser treatment to treat diffuse DME. The goal of both kinds of procedures is to stop the leakage in the macula.
